Next Phase Is This
“Jump” is an explosive, high-octane 1992 hip-hop anthem that introduced the teenage duo Kris Kross (Mac Daddy and Daddy Mac) to global superstardom. Produced by Jermaine Dupri, the track features a hard-hitting, fast-paced beat built upon a heavy, looping bassline sampled from Ohio Players and a piercing horn screech from Cypress Hill. The production creates…
“California Girls” is a legendary, beautifully complex 1965 sunshine-pop and surf-rock masterpiece that stands as a definitive pinnacle of The Beach Boys’ catalog. Arranged by Brian Wilson using the elite studio musicians known as The Wrecking Crew, the track opens with a gorgeous, orchestral symphonic introduction featuring French horns and delicate chimes. This transitions seamlessly…
“Notorious” is a sleek, ultra-stylish 1986 synth-funk and new wave anthem that signaled a sophisticated, mature musical rebirth for British icons Duran Duran. Co-produced by Chic’s Nile Rodgers, the track is heavily driven by a fat, popping bassline, sharp, syncopated funk guitar scratching, and a punchy, aggressive horn section arranged by The Borneo Horns. This…
“Stir It Up” is a sultry, slow-grooving reggae classic originally penned by Marley in 1967 and later popularized globally on the Wailers’ 1973 major-label debut album, Catch a Fire. The track is driven by a hypnotic, exceptionally fluid bassline and a dripping, wah-wah guitar effect that gives the arrangement a warm, intimate, and organic texture….
“My Friend, Mr. Nobody” is a standout episode of Lost in Space because it shifts the focus away from the typical “monster of the week” formula toward a more psychological and touching character study of Penny Robinson. While the rest of the family is preoccupied with the practicalities of survival and the looming threat of the environment,…
“One Woman” is a smooth, sophisticated 1993 contemporary R&B and hip-hop soul ballad released by the talented female trio Jade from their multi-platinum debut album Jade To the Max. Produced by Vassal Benford, the track is built upon a slow-grooving, mid-tempo urban rhythm layered with soft synthesizer pads, a warm bassline, and elegant acoustic piano…
Welcome Stranger is a pivot point for the series, marking the first installment that didn’t rely on footage from the original unaired pilot. It introduces Warren Oates as Jimmy Hapgood, a “space cowboy” whose rough-around-the-edges charm and colloquial dialogue, like being “as lonesome as a wood tick on a bald mountain,” cleverly marries the classic American…
“Joanna” is a breezy, soulful 1983 R&B and pop track that served as a massive hit single from the group’s album In the Heart. The song features an incredibly catchy, mid-tempo groove driven by a walking bassline, jazzy guitar chords, and a bright, finger-snapping rhythm that echoes vintage doo-wop styles. The arrangement is perfectly polished,…
“The Hungry Sea” is a standout episode for its visual ambition and atmospheric tension. As the Robinsons continue their journey south in the Chariot, they must cross a vast, dried-up seabed that begins to flood as the planet’s orbit brings it closer to its suns. The episode effectively uses the “race against time” trope, creating…
In this installment, the Robinson family is forced to abandon their primary campsite due to a drastic drop in temperature, leading them on a perilous trek toward the planet’s south. The episode excels at establishing the survivalist tone of the early series, focusing on the harsh, unpredictable environment of Priplanus. The tension is palpable as…
